The ALS Society of BC is deeply grateful to Dr. Andrew and Kathleen Eisen, the Society’s “2023 Exceptional Support of ALS Research” award winners, for their unwavering support of ALS BC PROJECT HOPE. With their recent cheque donation of $40,000, their total contributions now stand at a staggering $185,000. As the top individual donors, their generosity is impacting the future of ALS research and care in British Columbia.
Dr. Eisen’s commitment to ALS research is recognized worldwide, with over 300 published papers and numerous books co-authored. Beyond financial contributions, he played a pivotal role in shaping ALS BC PROJECT HOPE. He served on the UBC recruiting committee, which brought Dr. Erik Pioro on board as the lead neurologist and ALS researcher at The Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Related Disorders (ALSRD) Clinic located at Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health (DMCBH) on the University of British Columbia (UBC) campus.
ALS BC PROJECT HOPE aims to fund sustainable research for ALS at UBC without the need to involve the complication and lengthy process of grant writing. Through the society’s committed supporters and partners coupled with forward-thinking initiatives, the society looks to raise necessary funds to further treatment and finding a cure, while incorporating accountability to those who donate to the initiative.
“This is why Kathy and I support this exciting research project” said Dr. Andrew Eisen.
Their philanthropy extends even further—Dr. Eisen is a founding member of the ALS Society of BC, and together, they hold an endowment of $1.65 million to support patient services and quality-of-life programs for people living with ALS.
“Words cannot adequately express our gratitude for their support, compassion and friendship. Their contribution spanning decades speaks volumes to the generosity of Dr. & Mrs. Eisen and it’s truly inspirational. These gestures just show why they are the heroes behind the fight against ALS” said Donald Miyazaki, Executive Director of the ALS Society of BC.
Dr. Andrew and Kathleen Eisen are amongst thousands who have collectively joined to donate to ALSBC’s PROJECT HOPE initiative. Through a promise made to UBC and the Province of British Columbia, the ALS Society of BC has committed to donating an additional $20 million to establish an ideal setting that not only merges but enhances current research and clinical care innovations.
